Clinical Study of Postoperative Intraabdominal Abscesses



Abstract
This study included the clinical analysis of 33 cases of post operative intraabdominal abscesses about its incidence, symptoms & signs, diagnostic procedure & laboratory findings, operative procedures, complications, and mortality, which were treated surgically at Department of Surgery in Ewha University Hospital during 5 years and 2 months from January, I978 to February, 1933.
The results were as follows
1) Of the 33 patients in the series, the mean age was 36.7 years(range 8 to 63). There were 18 male and 15 female patients.
2) The common previous operations of the intraabdominal abscess were appendectomy (39. 4) and gastroduodenal operation (18.2).
3) The common location of abscess was Inter-loop abscess(30. 3%) and Subphrenic abscess (24.2 %) .
4) The cardinal symptoms & signs were Fever & Chillness(81.8%), Abdominal pain(63. 6%), Abdominal distension(57. 6%) and Localized tenderness(54.55).
5) Microorganisms isolated frcm patients with postoperative intraabdominal abscess were E-coli(40%) and Proteus(15%).
6) Three main methods of treatment were used Exploratory laparotomy and drainage(63. 6
%), Curative operation & drainage(21.2%) and Rib resection & drainage(15.2%).
7) 5 deaths occured in these groups and the mortality was 15.2%. The causes of death were sepsis and electrolyte imbalance.
